Fly for Fun with Hobby Drones in Middle Georgia

Drone flying started as a hobby for us, and it still is. Join the Middle Georgia community of hobby pilots.

Beginner Lessons

New to flying? We run 90-minute intro sessions at a local field, bring your drone (or borrow one of ours) and walk away knowing the basics of stable hovering, camera moves, and FAA TRUST registration.

FPV Meetups

We host monthly FPV flying meetups around Macon. Tinywhoops, freestyle, and racing, all skill levels welcome. Follow our updates for the next meet.

Build Workshops

Want to build your own FPV quad? Sign up for a Saturday build workshop in our shop and walk out with a flight-ready drone you put together yourself.

Where to Fly

We maintain a list of recreational flying spots around Macon and Warner Robins, fields, parks, and FRIAs that welcome hobby pilots.

Preparing for recreational drone flying

Fly for fun with a plan that fits your experience and aircraft. Before heading to a field, check current airspace restrictions, the weather, local rules, and permission to use the location. Recreational drone pilots should review the FAA's current requirements, including TRUST, registration where applicable, and Remote ID where required. A park or open space is not automatically an approved place to fly.

For a first practice session, choose simple goals such as a steady hover, controlled landing, and a short flight within visual line of sight. Inspect propellers and batteries before takeoff, keep clear of people and traffic, and leave enough battery reserve for a safe return. Avoid using an unfamiliar mode or testing a new build in a crowded location.

Choosing equipment and asking questions

Camera drones and FPV aircraft offer different flying experiences. Tell us whether you want relaxed photography, hands-on building, or an introduction to FPV. Mention any drone, controller, goggles, or simulator you already own so the conversation can focus on compatible equipment. Contact AIRBURST to ask about the current availability of lessons, meetups, and workshops rather than assuming an event is scheduled on a particular date.

Rules every hobby pilot should know

Recreational pilots in the United States need to pass the free TRUST test, register drones that weigh more than 250 grams, and fly at or below 400 feet in uncontrolled airspace. Near Robins Air Force Base and the Macon airports, controlled airspace means you need LAANC authorization before takeoff, even for a quick hobby flight. Keep the drone within your line of sight, avoid flying over people and moving cars, and check local park rules before you launch.

Getting better at flying

Practice in an open field with no trees or people nearby, start in beginner mode, and learn how to land manually before you rely on return-to-home. FPV pilots should spend time in a simulator before their first real flight, since crashes are cheaper there. When something breaks, bring the aircraft and a short note about what happened to our bench, and we will tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense.
